Bible Passage:  Luke 13-14

In Luke 13:10-17, our Lord Jesus healed a woman who, attended church despite her infirmity.

This woman came to Christ to be taught and then he healed her. This cure represents the work of Christ’s grace upon the soul.

By the grace and mercy of God we are healthy and are able to attend church services. Coming for church is the least we can do, right?

A few months back, someone told me that he/she didn’t have to attend church services and would content himself/herself with studying the bible on his/her own.

He/she would observe the Sabbath, but in his/her own way.

We all know very well that attending church does matter.

Christianity is not a solitary religion.

We need the support and encouragement of one another. We can be motivated by our fellow believers. We can bear each others’ burdens.

The Bible has much to say about the importance of worship. For example,

Joel 2: 16 -17

“Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes…”

It also appears in the New Testament:

Hebrews 10: 23-25

“…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

The Church is where Christians can worship God and also support one another.

Through attending Church we can build relationships. We can learn each other needs, and pray for and support each other.

Faithful attendance at Church encourages and also motivates us in our spiritual walk with the Lord.

If we refuse to attend Church, we are short changing ourselves and denying ourselves the support of fellow brethren travelling along the same road as us.

While it is true we can worship God when we are all alone, mutual support of each other is very important.

If we really love God and are part of Christ’s body, we will recognize our need to fit into the body of believers.

On the other hand, we also need to encourage our friends who have stopped attending church. Sometimes we put in our utmost effort, we have encouraged or even cautioned them till we are blue in the face.

When words fall on deaf ears, the least we could do is pray earnestly for their return.

As members of the body of Christ, we belong to each other and are responsible for one another.

We are accountable for the brothers and sisters who need our help.

so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.(Rom 12:5)

One Response to “Luke 13-14”

  1. PS Says:

Luke 13:14 …the ruler of the synagogue said,”There are six days on which men ought to do work, therefore, come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.’

Lord Jesus is the Lord of Sabbath. His grace and mercy is especially abundant for those who keep His Sabbath.

Just share a short testimony of my mum: My mum attends Fri evening service at USSP. She usually takes about 10 mins to walk from Kovan MRT to GB. One of the Fridays a few months ago, the walk took her 20 mins bec of a pain in her leg. In her prayer during the service, she told Lord Jesus that it was difficult to walk bec her leg was really painful. And she has to walk a similar distance when she goes to Adam the next day. Lord Jesus is merciful to simplistic people like her. Thank God, when she walked to the MRT after service, the pain was gone.

It is a blessing to be simple. Simplistic people like my mum only sees a gate which she is to walk through. she doesn’t see a “narrow” gate. By the grace of God, she is in the true fold. May Lord Jesus continue to shower His mercy on her and walk with her till she enters the kingdom of heaven.
